Have you ever seen the Fall Colours?

The fall colours in Southern Ontario are beautiful!

So, I had some of my readers ask about the fall time in Canada.

The trees, the colours, the leaves… if you’ve never experienced it before- check this out! It’s so amazing – the leaves look like they are painted I’ve heard some people say before.  So, this will be a photo-featured blog.

The colours of fall in Southern Ontario, Canada.

The ravishing reds

My husband and I took a country road drive to relax and enjoy.

We couldn’t resist but take photos!

Here’s the classic shot of the Canadian maple leaf in the fall.  🇨🇦

It always amazes me when there are 3 of the same type of tree in the same area, and they all have different colour leaves.

Sumac branch in the forest
Bright red tree in the forest

This plant is called sumac. It looks very fuzzy. It was used by the Indigenous People’s of Canada as a natural dye for clothing and other things.

Sumac was also used to make a drink, and a stomach pain aid.

…but there is a type of poison sumac, like poison ivy, so take care when you see sumac.

Outrageous Oranges

Sometimes the orange is so bright that it looks like fire! 🔥

There are so many shades of orange too!

I think this colour is my favourite for the changing leaves.  It’s so bright and vibrant!

Did you know that the red, orange, and yellow on the leafs are from a lack of chlorophyll because it’s less sunny and warm?  Basically, the green fades away and the remaining colours start to show themselves.

Yep, it’s true! 🍂

Umm, yay, there are not a lot of words that start with y… 😆

youthful? yielding? I give up!

On to the next colour…

The Yellows!

These yellows are so vibrant that they almost feel tropical! 💛

Yellow is a very common colour for many trees in Southern Ontario.

Some of the types of trees that get yellow leaves are:

  • red maple
  • aspen
  • japanese maple
  • silver birch
  • honey locust
  • hickory
  • sugar maple
  • beech tree
  • staghorn sumac

There are a lot as you can tell.

There are actually more, but you get the picture…

Dried up yellow corn stalk in a field

…And of course, in fall the dried corn stalks in the large fields turn yellow too.

There are some farmers who even turn their fields of corn stalks into corn mazes!

Have you even been in one? They are fun!  You are probably going to get lost a bit, but so fun!

Some of the corn mazes have clues or checkpoints that you have to find in the maze, then you get a prize if you find them all!

If you would like to learn more about corn mazes, check out this blog! Corn Maze & Fall Farm in Ontario.

Georgeous Greens

Finally, there are some trees that loose their colour and their leaves later than other leaves, just like some birds migrate earlier than other birds.

…and of course, there are the evergreen trees.

As the name implies, they are always green.

The reason for this is that they don’t have leaves, they have needles instead.

Can you spot the evergreen trees?

Here you can see how trees in the same area can be completely different looking from each other.

Even if they are in the same area, different factors like the amount of sun or shade they get, the type of tree they are and the weather can affect the timing of the colour change for the leaves.

Early frost, lots of rain, very hot or very cold, very windy… all these extreme situations can affect when they trees leaves will change colour.

The Maple Leaf

The classic Canadian maple leaf.  It’s so famous it’s even a symbol of Canada.  It’s on our flag. 🇨🇦

When we had pennies, it was on them too!A Canadian penny showing a maple leaf

I pulled out my coin collection so I could show you a Canadian penny!

The penny stopped being used in February of 2013.

Did you know there are many types of maple trees? I know there is the classic maple leaf on the Canadian flag, but there are many other types of maple trees. 🍁
