Pretty Places in Canada

A bit about Canada…

As of  2024, there are 38,948,378 people living in Canada.

It’s actually the 2nd largest country in the world, with only Russia being bigger.

Canada has the largest land border that is shared with the United States. It’s almost 9000 kms long!

Also, Canada has the most amount of lakes than any other country.  This is one of the reasons that we have such a beautiful cottage country!

If you’re interested in more facts about Canada check out these Interesting Facts About Canadian Culture.

Provinces and territories

Canada has 10 provinces and 3 territories.

The territories are along the top of the country, and the provinces spread from sea to sea across Canada.

Map of Canada labelled

There used to only be only 2 territories, but that changed in 1999.

Canada created a new territory called Nunavut. Nunavut means ‘our land’ in Inuktitut. This is an Indigenous language of that area.

Basically the Northwest Territory was divided, and part became Nunavut because of Indigenous land claims.

Diversity

What makes up Canada? So much! …from forests, rainforests, plains, hills, mountains, escarpments, towns, villages, cities and farms.

Then there’s the lakes, rivers, streams, bays, and gulfs, and of course the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

With all this diversity there is bound to be a lot of pretty places, so let’s dive in!

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls, it’s one of the 1st places that people think about, so naturally it is the 1st one I am listing.

Depending on your style of travel, Niagara Falls can be very wild and fun, or it can be pretty and romantic.  If you’re looking for romance in Niagara Falls, check  out some Romantic Niagara Falls Activities.

Of course, the wonder of the world – Niagara Falls is full of so much awe-inspiring beauty!  The Niagara Falls are lit up at night with colours that dance on the falls.

There are so many elegant and beautiful hotels with amazing views of the city lights and the Niagara Falls.

A few that I recommend booking for great views are:

Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview Hotel & Spa

Tower Hotel at Fallsview

Hilton Niagara Falls/ Fallsview Hotel and Suites

the Horseshoe fall in Niagara Falls
Clifton Hill in Niagara Falls, Canada

Also, you can mingle around the games and fun on Clifton Hill, there is so much going on at Clifton Hill that I wrote a whole travel blog about it: Niagara Falls- Clifton Hill Attractions.

Another option is Lundy’s Lane where you can dine and shop. You can enjoy the outlet mall and even eat in a spaceship restaurant!

Don’t rule out visiting Niagara Falls in the winter! In fact, I highly recommend it! There is the Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls with pretty lights all along the falls and main road.

During this festival there are fire work displays and the falls are lit up in pretty colours too!

If it’s very cold you may have the breathtaking chance to see the Niagara Falls when it’s partially frozen!!  It’s worth being out in the cold to see the Niagara Falls with ice covering it!

There are so many Epic Things To Do in Niagara Falls that give you beautiful views and experiences! A couple examples are zip lining by the falls and taking an aero car over the Niagara River.

You can use the map above where I have marked some attractions, to find some things to do and some beautiful hotels with amazing views!

Elora, Ontario

Elora is a beautiful town known for the Elora Gorge and the beautiful limestone buildings.

Being in Elora feels like you’ve entered a Hallmark movie as you mingle through the streets with your hot chocolate or ice cream in hand.  Elora has actually been the backdrop for several movies.

I recommend Elora on a warm evening, but even more so… Elora is so very pretty at Christmas time!  When the sun has set and the lights start to glimmer the magic begins!

There are so many pretty photo ops and views to take in.

You can walk down little side streets, mingle downtown, or take a hike in the forest.

Of course, no trip to Elora would be complete without checking out the Elora Gorge.

I recommend checking out the Elora Mill. There is a classy restaurant that you can dine in while you watch the rushing of the Elora Gorge.

Some other hotels that are great in Elora are:

The Victoria Suite in Elora

The Walper Hotel

Elora Gorge in Elora, Ontario
The Lights in Elora, Ontario

Victoria, British Columbia

Victoria is on Vancouver Island in British Columbia.

It’s full of scenic views, tons of nature, and victorian architecture.

Some amazing buildings that I suggest visiting are the Parliament buildings and the Fairmont Empress Hotel. Both are Iconic buildings to see during the day or night!

Don’t forget the pretty gardens and floral displays too.  Beacon Hill Park is a beautiful park that has the tallest totem pole in Canada!

Another pretty place to visit is the Victoria harbour and Fishermen’s Wharf with all the boats in the water bobbing up and down as you stroll.

Some beautiful hotels that I recommend are:

Fairmont Empress Hotel

Abigail’s Hotel

The Craigmyle

Banff National Park

Banff is not a town, but a national park!

So anywhere you go your backdrop is epic mountains and beautiful nature scenes straight out of a movie!

The buildings and shops are so quaint and pretty, especially when there are all lit up at night.

This is not just another pretty place in Canada, it’s home to some epic adventures like skiing and and hiking.

You can ride a gondola up a mountain for absolutely breathtaking views. If you thought that was pretty, when you get to the top, your view is now 6 mountain ranges with beautiful nature for as far as your eyes can see!

If you’re craving some beauty and adventure, Via Ferratas will not disappoint!

You can rock climb or cross a very daring suspension bridge which holds amazing views for you!

As for places to stay, there are some great hotels in Banff.

A few recommendations are:

Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario

Niagara-On-The-Lake is the definition of a pretty place in Canada!

It’s away from the busyness of Niagara Falls, but close enough that you can get there in 30 minutes or so.

From the beautiful wineries to the nature, park, shops and quaint decor it’s such a pretty place!

You can even take in the sights of downtown via a horse and carriage ride year-round!

And for all the Christmas lovers, there is a Christmas shop that is also open all year. It’s full of Christmas ornaments, decor, signs, mugs, and much more.

You will find yourself stopping for another picture again and again as you admire the beautiful shops, restaurants, hotels and decor.

The historic buildings and the pretty small-town charm are so inviting to explore.

It’s a place that you can stroll with an ice cream and window shop and also sip on local wines while you enjoy dining at a nice restaurant.

I highly recommend checking out the Prince of Wales Hotel!  Even if you don’t stay there, go in and you can feel the elegance in every direction that you look!

This is also the spot where you can start a horse and carriage ride too!

There are some really beautiful hotels in Niagara-On-The-Lake.

Here are some of the best in my opinion:

Prince of Wales

Riverbend Inn & Vineyard

Queens Landing

Another key feature to Niagara-On-The-Lake is the wineries! There are so many wineries in the area that it would be a shame not to check some out!

I recommend getting a driver or booking this tour because no one wants to be drinking and driving, and they are not very close together.  They way you can arrive in style and check out a variety of local Niagara wines!

Quebec City, Quebec

Quebec City, specifically Old Quebec City is yet another perfect example of a pretty place in Canada! …this one s full of Victorian charm and history.

In fact, it’s an UNESCO site.  Old Quebec City has an upper and lower level that are both so amazing!

Walking on the old brick roads and seeing the beautiful architecture and style of the buildings with flower-boxes under windows and beautiful decor… it’s wonderful!

Quebec, in my opinion, has one of the most impressive and beautiful hotels in Canada! I had the luxury of staying there and it is completely elegant and classy!

One of the top places that I recommend visiting is the Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac.  It’s actually a hotel, so I definitely suggest staying there, but if you choose a different hotel, I would 100% visit it.

Some other hotels that I recommend are:

Hotel le Priori

Hotel Manoir Victoria

Old Quebec
Le Chateau Frontenac - pretty place in Canada- Quebec

I recommend going on a walking tour or exploring on your own, there is so much to be taken in!

This is a French speaking area of Canada, but there is some English, espeically in tourist areas.

Walk down one of the oldest streets in Canada, Petit Champlain, and enjoy shopping there.

Make sure that you walk down too the Old Port too!

Every direction that you look in Old Quebec holds another adventure and of course, pretty views!

Montreal, Quebec

Montreal, is a bit similar to Quebec City, in the way that there is an Old Montreal that is so very pretty.

This is also a French speaking area of Canada.

An absolute must-see is the Basilique Notre Dame! It has the most vibrant and beautiful blues in the their decor and stained glass windows that I have ever enjoyed!

Also, make sure you visit Old Montreal! There are cobble-stone roads, shops, outdoor kiosks, markets and restaurants.

The Montreal Botanical Gardens are also very pretty to walk around and take pictures.

Another very pretty place is the Old Port in Montreal, especially at night when all the lights are glowing on the water!

Make sure that you don’t miss out on seeing Rue St.-Paul. ‘Rue’ means street in French.  This street holds a lot of beautiful architecture and views to enjoy!

There are also some very nice hotels in Montreal.  Here are a few  great hotels to book:

Hôtel Birks Montréal

William Gray by Gray Collection

Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth

Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia

Cape Breton is great! It has east coast hospitality and beautiful nature and towns!

For me, the absolute best part is the Cabot Trail! It is a 298km road that you drive on around the island.  You will be surrounded by forest, then  go by ocean views as you wind up and down and around the island.

There are some sharp turns so take good care while you’re enjoying the pretty views.

There are some lookout areas where you can pull over and capture the scenery!

There are also hiking trails that you take if you’re looking for more adventure.

If you love seafood and fish you will pass through fishing villages where you can enjoy fresh seafood like lobster.

The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton
The Cabot Trail in Cape Breton

I also recommend taking in some of the traditional Celtic music in the area at a pub or event. You will find yourself getting wrapped up in the energy of the music in no time at all!

Some hotels with a nice Cape Breton feel are:

Auberge Gisele’s Inn

Keltic Quay Cottages & Bayfront Lodge

The Water’s Edge Inn & Gallery

Hopewell Rocks, New Brunswick

Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, Canada
Hopewell Rocks in New Brunswick, Canada

Hopewell Rocks is a provincial park that connects with the Bay of Fundy.

What is so interesting about this park is the sea stacks.

A sea stack looks a tall tower or formation made from rock.

These sea stacks are found on the sand where the tide comes in.

I highly recommend checking out the sea stacks twice!

That’s the beauty of it – you check it out when the tide is high and the sea stacks are under water.  Then you go back when it’s low tide and walk on the sand right next to the bottom of the sea stacks!

I recommend seeing the high tide first, but either way it’s very nice.

No need to guess, they have a chart displayed with timing of when the tide is high and low.

There are different hiking trails that you can take to get down to the bottom of the sea stacks when the tide is low with varying difficulty levels.

Around the park there are different restaurants and shops, as well as a gift shop for Hopewell Rocks too!

You can also rent a kayak and go around the sea stacks during high tide.

There are less hotels in this area, so I recommend booking in advance.

Here are a few recomendations:

Marshlands Inn

Mountainview Solitude Retreat

other hotels in the area

Lunenburg, Nova Scotia

Lunenburg is a UNESCO site.

It’s filled with old colonial colourful buildings by the water.

The marina is a very nice area to take a stroll while you take in the sights of the boats, water and this quaint town.

If you have seen Canadian coins, on the back of the ten cent coin is a sailboat called the BlueNose.  Well this actual boat is docked at Lunenburg.  In fact, you can take a cruise on it when the weather is nice.

This is a historical town with older buildings.

The hotels have the charm and style of Lunenburg.

Some hotels that I recommend checking out are:

Brigantine Inn

Smugglers Cove Inn

other Lunenburg hotels
