Maintaining Self-care when travelling

It can be tough, but it doesn’t have to be.

I am going to share some tips that I either use or recommend to other to maintain self-care when travelling.

If your physical, emotional, spiritual or mental health is not well, it can make it challenging to enjoy your travels to their fullest.

I am going to cover different aspects of self and ways to keep up self-care while you’re travelling.

Physically

Of course, you don’t want to get sick while travelling, so make sure you drink lots of water and eat some healthy foods.

Taking this collapsible water bottle with you as you travel will make it easier to quickly fill it up to keep hydrated.

If you’re in a hot environment or you’re being very physically active, you may want to pack some vitamins and some gatorade packages.

The gatorade packages are very compact, so they pack well. They are a great way to rehydrate your body or prevent dehydration.

I think we have all had a time when we ate a new food or tried something different and it did not end well…

Probiotics or digestive enzymes are something that has helped me when the cuisine was different than what I am used to.

Of course, I am not a doctor, and I am not telling you to take them, but it’s something that you could possible learn more about and see if it works for you or not.

This probiotic is one that works well for my body, and I believe that it has helped my stomach to be calmer sometimes.

Maybe you’re going on a cruise, boat excursion, airplane, or some other type of travel that makes you feel motion sickness. Maybe it’s just a long drive, or a tour or commute on a bumpy rustic roads.

Whatever it is, if you get motion sickness, these may help you.

I know that they helped me.  When I went to work on a cruise ship  I invested in these motion sickness travel wristbands to help get used to living and working at sea.

You just have to make sure that you put the little white button on the right place on your arm. This band puts pressure on an acupressure point that is supposed to help to restore balance within your body.

Movement is something that keeps your muscles and joints happy.  I think it’s a good idea to keep up movement while travelling.

If you’re a gym lover, you have a few options.  You could join a gym that has international locations.  This could also be helpful if you need a place to shower while travelling too!

Sometimes, when I am travelling for a longer period of time, I pack resistance bands.

This can be used in many different ways to add more resistance to your exercises for your legs and arms.

Although you may not have your home gym equipment while travelling, you can still maintain a sense of physical fitness with the resistance band with handles paired with outdoor activities. Because of the handles they are more versatile, and you can use them to work different muscles.

Some activities to keep up physical movement are:

  • walking
  • running
  • hiking
  • swimming
  • sports
  • paddle boarding
  • surfing
  • kayaking

If you’re staying at a resort or hotel, sometimes they offer different activities like beach volleyball or soccer that you can join.

There are also some beaches and places that have really cool outdoor gyms that you can use.

Mentally

Keeping your mind stimulated with interesting things and challenges is important and also fun.

There are so many ways to keep up balance mentally with others such as:

  • interesting conversation with others
  • go on an interesting tour
  • visit a museum
  • visit a historical place
  • participate in traditional teachings when appropriate
  • go to a local book store
  • play board games or card games

If you’re travelling on your own, or want to have some time on your own.

You can do most of the above activities on your own too.

If you want to have a chilled-out beach day, but not be bored mentally, you can get an activity book  like the ones shown here.

They have different puzzles, riddles, word searches, crosswords and more challenge yourself.

The Mexico one will even challenge your Spanish skills for some of the puzzles.

Spiritual

Sometimes it can be hard to keep up your regular spiritual or religious practices and routines.

Obviously, what you choose depends on your beliefs and practices.

So, this aspect is very personal and will depend on your personal beliefs, as well as where you are.

There are many places that may have meditations and yoga if that’s your thing.

Also some local churches may have services that you can attend.

There may be drum circles or other events that you can either watch or join in.

For others spirituality is more about connecting with the land and nature.

You can find a safe place to go for a hike, or be with the water, admire the nature, and watch the wildlife.

Of course, there are also spiritual or religious retreats that you could attend while travelling.

Emotional

There are so many ways to take care of your emotional health while travelling!

It may be the salt and sun on your skin at the beach or a day at the spa to wind down.

Watching the sunset, going for a walk amongst nature, having a deep talk with someone, learning something new can all be ways to balance out your emotions.

Sometimes travel can be stressful and get chaotic or disorganized.

That’s where the Travel Planner and Organizer shown above can help with bringing a sense of calm.

If you are one of those people that feel calm and at peace when you’re organized, you know where you will sleep, the details of your flight, and wrote down some thing to remember, then this Travel Planner and Organizer could be very helpful for you!

There are pages for itinerary planning, budget planning, to do lists, packing lists, travel details pages, journal pages and more.

Maybe your travels are after a breakup, or other event that made you feel emotional.

Using My Travel Journal shown above can help you to journal your thoughts and feelings.

Sometimes the act of writing things down, and maybe even reading it again after can be very therapeutic.

My Travel Journal can also help you to record and reflect on your journey and to remember interesting and impactful travel experiences.

Connect with friends & family

Sometimes we just need to talk to our family and close friends back home to feel balanced and emotionally good.

It can get expensive to do this, I recommend using Airalo to keep in touch with friends and family.

All you have to do is download the Mobile App for Airalo then pick your destination and get your eSIM card.  This way you can use your phone when you first arrive to figure things out safely, which is calming.

Also, you can use your phone to keep in touch with friends and family too!

I find those 2 reasons to be very calming and helpful.  I feel organized, I can use google maps if I need directions. I can call a taxi or my hotel on my own. I can also call friends and family when I want too!

Be prepared and organized when you arrive

Sometimes just getting organized and prepared can help you to feel more calm and balanced.

Feel free to use these widgets to book your hotel or rent a car in advance, so that you’re organized and prepared for your trip!

You don’t need to worry about the stress of not being able to find somewhere to stay or the physical stress of hauling your luggage around as you try to find a hotel and car rental.

Planning for peace of mind

Maybe you feel stressed about planning out your days or getting the tour that you want on the day that you want, you can book in advance with Viator.

It's all about Balance!

For me it’s all about balance.  It has always been a guiding factor in my life.

A little bit of craziness or fun, followed by some peaceful moments.

Having some time to connect with friends and family, and then some time to explore new places on my own or with my husband.

Eating a healthy meal and taking some time to reflect, followed by a wild tour or cruise.

It’s all about balance!  I believe that self-care while travelling is important. I hope that some of these tips and recommendations will help you to maintain self-care while travelling.

What is most important for you?

Is it the

  • physical aspect
  • mental aspect
  • emotional aspect
  • spiritual aspect

that is most important for you to keep balance with while travelling?

Or maybe it’s a combo or 2 or more that are most important to you.
