But first, the story behind Canopy River! I met with Miguel Pulido Vazquez, Consejo de Adminsitracion, and Fidel Cuevas Alvarez, Director de Ventas. They are 2 of the cooperative owners of Canopy River.

The story of Canopy River that they shared with me was very inspiring! 😊

Two of the Cooperative Owners of Canopy River
Miguel Pulido Vazquez, Fidel Cuevas Alvarez, and myself at the beautiful Canopy River sign!

Canopy River is located in the Ejido de Jorullo.  An Ejido is a community of people that communally use land for agriculture, living and more.

35 of the people from this Ejido decided to create Canopy River. They are all cooperative owners of Canopy River.

So, in 2005, these people from the Ejido El Jorullo started to build Canopy River.  First, they made 10 ziplines, which you can still enjoy now!

Next, they built a palapa. A palapa is an open-concept structure with a palm-leaf roof.  Talk about feeling like you’re on vacation! 🌴

They have created a very unique palapa because it is the largest palapa in Puerto Vallarta.

So, the biggest palapa in Puerto Vallarta, and the biggest suspension bridge in the world!!

Can’t beat that!! Literally!

Next, came a kitchen, then The River Expedition, and it grew step-by-step like that!

Each time they made money, they re-invested some of it into a new feature of Canopy River.

Now, there are so many activities!  You could spend the whole weekend there!

I don’t think anyone could ever be bored at Canopy River, there is such a variety of things to do! ATV rides, RZR rides, hiking to top of mountain, a waterfall that falls down into the Rio Cuale, mule rides, tequila tasting, a restaurant bar, and so much nature and animals to discover.

There is even a pool, so don’t forget your swimsuit!

The fun:

  • Rafting
  • Mule rides
  • Jorullo Bridge ATV tour
  • Jorullo Bridge RZR tour
  • Jorullo Bridge RZR tour Deluxe
  • Ziplining
  • Horseback riding tour
  • Jorullo Bridge Hiking tour
  • Tequila tasting
  • The River Expedition An example of how these tours work. The River Expedition includes ziplining, rafting, rappeling, hiking, a mule ride, a tarzan line, and tequila tasting and a drink!

WOW!

You can pair some of these activities together as a combo for your day at Canopy River.

For any tour that you choose there are English and Spanish speaking tour guides, so no worries about not understanding.

Also, all tours include a shuttle to and from Canopy River.

…And after to calm down your adrenaline there is also:

  • a pool
  • a restaurant with great food
  • a hammock area
  • a bar
  • tequila and drinks!

A Place that you can really feel good about having fun at!

Their objective is to give work to the people that live in the Ejido and to protect and preserve the environment.  People from the Ejido are apart of the creation and success of Canopy River!

The profits from Canopy River are also used to help the people from the Ejido.  For example, they are given the opportunity to take English courses and learn other skills too.

Canopy River is apart of the Association of Sustainability.  Canopy River has also won the Sustainable Tourism Award for Puerto Vallarta!  They consider protecting and taking care of the land and environment to be very important!

Some of the things that they have done for their Ejido with their profits are:

  • they created an improved road for students to walk to school
  • helped with schooling for students
  • supported people from the ejido with medical concerns
  • they helped with housing during covid for some people from the Ejido
  • they had English classes for students from the Ejido
  • created more tours at Canopy River which led to more jobs

They have 140 employees that are all from the Ejido. So, Canopy River is also helping the community by giving them jobs too.

Tequila

Canopy River Tequila Shot
Pouring Canopy Rivers own Tequila!

A shot of Canopy River’s own tequila at the bar you get to after you cross the bridge. You can take your shot while you look at that amazing bridge you just crossed.  Cheers!

Another project that the people from Canopy River created was their own “Tequilera”- a place where they make their own brand of tequila.  This is a special brand because the only place you can taste it is at Canopy River!

They call their Tequila ‘Chula Parranda’. 🍹 You can enjoy this unique and local tequila with some of the tours because there is tequila tasting included! 🍹

In the high-season, which is from November to April, they have an authentic Mexican fair! This is a very entertaining and fun event! There is so much going on, you will be constantly entertained when you are at this Authentic Mexican Fair! They call it ‘Fiesta in the Mountains’, so look for this title when you book your tour.

They have a show with horses that dance and a rodeo show, dancing, a fire spinning show, mariachis, traditional folklore dances, an amazing buffet.  This is a 3 hour-long show! There are even fireworks!! 🎆

the Rodeo at Canopy River with horses

Maybe you were wondering how much you would understand – no worries-  because the show is in both English and Spanish.

On Saturdays and Sundays there is a buffet with tortillas that are hand-made. The best part of the buffet is that all of the food comes from the ejido and local farmers, so it is all super fresh, local, and organic!

They have a truly authentic drink available when they have the traditional fair.  It’s called “Pajareta” it is a drink with fresh milk, chocolate, alcohol and sugar.  So, you can try drinking like a local with this non-touristy drink!

The Coapinoles Restaurant

The restaurant is under the massive palapa and has an amazing view! Once again, all the food comes from the Ejido, so it is local, fresh and organic! They even have hand-made tortillas, salsas and more!

The menu has a lot of variety, they have seafood, red meats, and typical Mexican dishes. If you don’t eat meat there are some options for you such as the ‘queso fundido natural’, nachos, guacamole, and quesadillas.

If you do eat meat and seafood, you can choose from many different types of seafood and meats like shrimp, fish, chicken, beef and ribs.

The latest addition to Canopy River is the pool, but they keep thinking of  new great ideas…

🌟🌟Insider scoop!! 🌟🌟

I asked so that I can share this tip with you.  Remember how I said that you could spend the whole weekend there because there is so much to do well…

Their next plans are to build a ‘Hacienca’ with 30 rooms.  This way you can experience “All the fun in 1 place!”  You don’t have to leave to sleep, you can just keep on enjoying while you sleep at Canopy River!

The Most Popular ...

When I asked Miguel and Fidel what’s the most popular attractions, they both definitively said the Bridge RZR tour.  This brings us to the BRIDGE!! This is what the RZR looks like. There are seat belts and room for 4 in this RZR.

RZR

The Bridge

I know, you want to know about the bridge! Well, here it goes!

The bridge is called Jorullo Bridge.

The suspension bridge is the longest and largest in the WORLD!

They worked with architects to make this 470 meter long bridge, yes meters!!!  And… it is 150 meters above the river too!

When you are on the bridge you can see 360 degrees around.  It’s just you, beautiful mountains, nature, and the bridge!!

It is an awesome experience!

As they say in Puerto Vallarta, “If you don’t cross the bridge, you don’t know Puerto Vallarta yet!”

You can have a tiny sneak peek here!

Setting up your Tours

There are free lockers that you can use to keep your things while you are ziplining around the jungle.  There are indoor washrooms and an outdoor shower at the pool.

The restaurant excepts cards for payment.

They only allow prescription glasses or contact lenses if you are doing the ziplining or the River Expedition.

Check out Canopy River for an awesome day and night of fun and adventure!

You can also book other tours in Puerto Vallarta through Viator.

Getting there

This is a place that you really feel good about supporting, plus have a full-on great experience!

I know you’re thinking maybe it’s far and an expensive cab ride, or you don’t want to drive after the tequila tasting- well no worries!!

There are shuttles that pick you and drop you off, so you don’t have to worry about driving or paying for a taxi after your tequilas.

There are 4 bus stops that pick you up and drop you off. Other ATV companies can’t pass into the Ejido de Jorullo, only Canopy River buses can enter here.

These are different pick up areas such as:

I live in PV. I only go on excursions when visitors arrive.😁I walked most of the way from Zona Romantica to Canopy River, finding the bus along the way. By the time we got there, there were no tours across the bridge, but I was intrigued. I’d love to do the ATV across the bridge! Because I’d like to explore on the ATV. After that grueling hike I longed for it!!!
