WWOOFing
If you don’t know WWOOF is, it stands for World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms.
So, you can travel to different organic farms and stay at the farm.
Although you don’t get a salary, you get free room and board. You also become a part of the community at the farm. You can often meet other travellers who are also ‘WWOOFing’ at the farm too! Plus, you are exploring somewhere new!
It is an interesting way to see places in Asia, Africa, Central & South America, and European countries. No hotel fees, no expensive restaurants, and the peaceful nature around you!
You usually meet like-minded people who value nature and are environmentally conscious too.
Work at a ski resort
This is often seasonal work. You could be an instructor, a server, cook, a social host/hostess, front desk, lift operator, or hotel staff.
Some ski resorts have spas and other services too. In this case, you could be a:
- massage therapist
- hair stylist
- esthetician
- nail technician
- fitness instructor
Obviously, this will depend upon the season, however there are ski lodges around the world! So if you have worked at one, your odds of getting another job at a ski lodge will be higher.
Cruise around the world
You could work on a cruise ship.
If waking up to a new view every day and new people regularly sounds great to you, working on a cruise ship may be for you!
You will meet people from around the world and get to know new places.
Between the guests, the crew, and the ports that you visit, there is constant variety in your life.
There is no such thing as boredom when you’re working on a cruise ship!!
You will be provided with accommodations and food for free, AND you will get paid.
Depending on your role on the ship, you may earn tips too!
Stay tuned for a future blog that talks in detail about what it is like to actually work on a cruise ship from my personal experience.
Plant Trees
Have you ever been somewhere and there were no trees?
Besides the ocean?
Trees are everywhere! Planting trees is not only good for the environment and the air, it’s also good for your health.
You are breathing fresh air, working physically, and reaping the benefits of being in a forest or natural area.
This is hard physical work, but the more trees that you plant the more that you get paid. You
Make sure that you are physically ‘ok’ with bending over, carrying trees, and digging with a shovel. For this job you need to wear gloves and boots.
For this job, you have to like camping, often you will sleep in your tent, but be provided food and an area to shower and eat.
Other times, you will be at a logging camp where you stay in a trailer, or in some cases you may stay in a motel or cabin.
Sometimes you pay a daily fee that provides you with food, a shower, and other necessities.
It can be a great way to become more physically fit while doing something great for the environment and enjoying nature.
Become a virtual assistant
All you need is your laptop and good wifi and your off!
Provided that you are familiar with managing social media and have some skills like:
- great verbal & written communication
- time management skills
- paying attention to details
- know how to use different social media platforms & certain computer programs
- scheduling
- typing and computer skills
Creativity is also a must for a job like this. Sometimes you are responsible for posting daily on a social media account for a business.
Especially now, there are many online job sites that post these types of jobs.
There is a wide variety in what a business will want you to do, so read the description carefully and apply to the ones that you feel confident doing.
Travel Guide & Tourist Staff
Take your passion for travel and share it with others!
Learn about a famous tourist attractions, excursion, or place.
Maybe you’re on a tour bus telling everyone to look on their left as they see a famous place.
Maybe you’re at a castle, attraction, historical site, or other tourist activity.
You can provide safety rules, historical facts and interesting information to the guests.
Maybe you are the person who sells the entry tickets, or does security, serves or cooks the food, cleans or more!
You can be a mascot dressing up like Mickey Mouse or some historical person or character.
There are really so many opportunities, maybe you are working at a ziplining place in the treetops in the jungle, or you are on an evening cruise with a live show and nightly fireworks.
The possibilities are endless!
Travel Photography
First, of course, you would need the skills as a photographer and the photography gear.
If you are a photographer, there are so many opportunities to work all over the world.
You can photograph:
- nature
- events
- tourists at attractions
- animals
- website photography
- food photography
- people
- weddings & events
to name a few…
You could work at a tourist park, historical or tourist attraction and take photos of people.
Have you ever been somewhere, like going up a tower or on a cruise, and before you get on a photographer takes your photo? After they show you the photos and you can buy them… well you could be that photographer!
Teach
This can be so varied! You could teach English if you have the right qualifications.
You will need at least a TESL or TEFL Certificate depending upon the grades or levels that you are teaching. Sometimes, you require a Degree.
For example, I have a Bachelor of Education and a TESL, TEFL and online teaching certifications. Although, all of those are not required, I thought the more qualified the better!
There is a link at the bottom of this blog if you’re interested in English classes with me.
You could teach at a school, college, night school, community centre, a camp, a youth organization, a child care centre…
Teaching children or caring for them during the day is another option.
Maybe you will teach a special skill like golfing, skiing, wines specialist, languages… the list could go on and on..
Or perhaps, you will teach a special skill that you have, but this may have to be proposed to a school or agency.
Depending on how specialized your skills are, you could find jobs posted for your skills online.
Server
If you can manage orders, holding a tray of drinks and plates of food, and multi-tasking this may be a good option for you.
There are restaurants everywhere, so the world is yours!
You can get to know different types of foods and customs around the world.
Now, you will have to work weekends and evenings. If it’s a bar restaurant, then you may have to work until last call.
Depending on the country that could be 2:00am, 4:00am or ?
If you’re a night person, then this could be worth it for you!
Although, you could pick a breakfast restaurant, you would start working early, but finish by 3:00pm at the latest usually.
Some restaurants cater to tourists and you have to wear a special uniform like dressing up like a pirate or hula dancer.
You could also choose a fancy restaurant, then you would have to wear more formal clothes.
If you know a lot about wines, beers, or other alcohols, you can use this to your advantage.
There are positions like wine somellier, which is someone who can describe, recommend and share a lot of information about different wines.
There are often great tips when you work as a server!
Nanny
There are different agencies that you can apply to to work abroad. In many of these cases you will be provided with accommodations for these jobs.
In most cases, having a police clearance is required. Sometimes you must have First Aid.
Other times, you have to have a diploma such as an Early Childhood Educator, Early Childhood Assistant, or other certificate or diploma. There is even a certificate to become a Professional Nanny.
But… sometimes you just need First Aid and a Police Check and you can become a nanny abroad.
There are dedicated websites that hire and place nannies that you could apply to.
You will work most days, and sometimes, depending on the job, you may cook and clean.
A perk can be, if the family is vacationing in Hawaii or somewhere else, they may pay your way, but you have to watch the children while you are there.
You will be taking the children to parks or other areas, so you will be exploring somewhere new while you get paid.
The world is YOURS!
So, don’t let money stop you, save up enough for you flight and a few beginning expenses (if your opportunity doesn’t pay for your flight), and the rest will work itself out as you work!
